Questions
How do I find the SIC code for my NAICS code?
Read the Census concordance backwards: it lists the 1987 SIC industries (or the parts of them) that make up each NAICS code. Census publishes the 1987 SIC to 2002 NAICS concordance; we carry each 2002 code through the official 2007, 2012, 2017 and 2022 concordances, so a code that later split or merged shows every 2022 code it went to.
What does “part of” an SIC code mean?
The SIC industry was split between several NAICS codes, so only the activity named in the note is in this NAICS code. If a form asks for one SIC code, use the one whose note matches your main activity.
Why does a NAICS code have no SIC code?
Only 3 of the 1,012 NAICS codes have no SIC match in the Census concordance: 112130 Dual-Purpose Cattle Ranching and Farming, 541120 Offices of Notaries and 551114 Corporate, Subsidiary, and Regional Managing Offices (under SIC these were auxiliary establishments, coded by the industry they served).
Do I need an SIC code for government contracts?
No. Federal solicitations, SAM.gov and the SBA size standards use NAICS codes. SIC codes are only asked for on some older or non-federal forms.
