SIC vs. NAICS
SIC codes (1987) were replaced by NAICS in 1997. Federal contracting, SAM.gov and the SBA use NAICS; some banks, insurers and older forms still ask for SIC.
Why one SIC code gives several NAICS codes
NAICS is more detailed, so many SIC industries were split across two or more NAICS codes.
Questions
How do I convert an SIC code to NAICS?
Look the 4-digit SIC code up in the Census concordance: it lists every NAICS code that took part of that SIC industry. Census publishes the 1987 SIC to 2002 NAICS concordance; we carry each 2002 code through the official 2007, 2012, 2017 and 2022 concordances, so a code that later split or merged shows every 2022 code it went to.
Why does one SIC code give several NAICS codes?
NAICS is more detailed than SIC. Many SIC industries were split, so each piece (for example “custom software” and “software design services”) went to a different NAICS code. Pick the code that matches what your business mainly does.
Is SIC still used?
Federal contracting uses NAICS: solicitations, SAM.gov registration and SBA size standards are by NAICS code. SIC codes still appear in older records, on the SEC EDGAR filer list and in some state and insurance forms.

2022 NAICS, the version in force for federal contracting since October 1, 2022.
